Miejska i Powiatowa Biblioteka Publiczna im. Marii Konopnickiej w Lubaniu (Lubań Library)

What is the project?

The library has launched a project to create an “eco-space for relaxation” within its premises. This is a comfortable area designed for rest, quiet, and community integration, merging nature, light and modern design.

Where and by whom?

The project is being implemented at the Miejska i Powiatowa Biblioteka Publiczna im. Marii Konopnickiej in Lubań (“the Library”) in the Rynek-Ratusz building, 59-800 Lubań.

It is funded by a grant awarded through the national initiative by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne S.A. (PSE) under their “Wzmocnij Swoje Otoczenie” (Strengthen Your Environment) programme.
Key features of the eco-space

Swap of lighting: replacing current lighting with warm LED light to promote comfort and calm.

Introduction of mobile vertical plant walls, planters with flowers, and artwork made from moss (“chrobotek”) to bring nature indoors.

The aim: increase comfort and functionality of the library’s environment, encourage mental ease, better concentration, and a sense of belonging to the community.
Who is the eco-space for?

It’s publicly accessible and designed for all library users.

There is special emphasis on youth, creating a space for them to develop interests, integrate with peers, and gain new skills.

Also benefits multi-generational integration: helping different age groups to feel included and connected.
Why is it important?

The combination of nature elements and improved lighting is shown to help reduce stress and enhance mental clarity. The library’s project explicitly lists these benefits.

It advances the idea of the library as a “third place” — not just somewhere to borrow books but a community hub for relaxation, connection and personal growth.

It also enhances the library’s role in providing something beyond the collection: experience, atmosphere, and wellbeing.
Practical information

Address: ul. Rynek-Ratusz, 59-800 Lubań.

As of now, we know the eco-space will be widely accessible to library users. Specific dates for full completion or opening may be provided by the library directly.

Regular library opening hours: For the main branch, Monday–Friday 08:30–16:00. Some Saturdays in the summer are also open.
What to expect when you visit

A quiet, inviting area with comfortable seating, greenery, perhaps ambient lighting.

Opportunity for reading, quiet reflection, study, or informal community conversation in a relaxed setting.

For younger visitors: a space where they can meet peers, work on projects, or just chill in a library environment that’s more atmosphere-driven.

For the library: a point of pride and modernisation — showing investment in not just books but environment, experience & community.
Why this matters for the town of Lubań

It demonstrates a forward-looking investment in culture, education and wellbeing in a smaller town setting.

By integrating design, nature and public service, the library is raising its role in the community.

It may attract more visitors and make the library more than a lending place — a point of community life.

It helps strengthen local identity and belonging: residents can enjoy a modern, green space in a civic institution.
