Lavrov Backs Iran as Trump Says Russia Is Doing Little to Help Tehran
Lavrov Backs Iran as Trump Says Russia Is Doing Little to Help Tehran
Russia has reaffirmed its support for Iran after US President Donald Trump accused Moscow of doing very little to help Tehran during the ongoing conflict.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the comments during a visit to Tehran on Monday, October 19, where he met Iranian officials and held talks with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The visit came only hours after Trump publicly said he wanted Russia's limited assistance to Iran to remain that way.
Lavrov Calls Iran's Cause 'Just'
Speaking alongside Araghchi, Lavrov said he believed Iran's cause was just and accused the United States and Israel of launching what he described as an unprovoked military campaign against Iran.
The Russian foreign minister also reaffirmed Moscow's willingness to support Tehran diplomatically. He said Russia was prepared to help find mutually acceptable solutions to the crisis and welcomed Iran's stated interest in diplomacy.
Lavrov's remarks represent a clear expression of political support for Tehran, even as questions remain over the extent of Russia's practical military assistance to Iran.
Trump Says Russia Is Doing 'Very Little'
Trump's comments came shortly before Lavrov's statements in Tehran.
In a post on Truth Social, the US president said Russia was doing "very little, if anything" to help Iran compared with what Moscow could potentially do. Trump said he wanted the situation to remain unchanged.
Trump's position appears to reflect his broader effort to keep Moscow engaged in negotiations over the war in Ukraine. He argued that imposing additional economic pressure on Russia could risk pushing President Vladimir Putin away from the negotiating table.
This creates a complicated diplomatic situation for Washington because the US wants Russia to remain involved in Ukraine peace discussions while also discouraging Moscow from providing greater assistance to Iran.
Russia Maintains Economic Ties With Iran
Lavrov made clear that Moscow does not intend to abandon its economic relationship with Tehran.
He said Russia would continue implementing economic and investment agreements with Iran despite the difficult circumstances surrounding the conflict.
Russia and Iran have strengthened their political, economic and security relationship in recent years, particularly as both countries have faced extensive Western sanctions.
The two countries signed a 20-year comprehensive strategic partnership agreement in January 2025. The agreement covers areas including defence, security, energy, trade and transport, although it does not create a formal mutual-defence obligation.
Strait of Hormuz Remains a Major Concern
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called for regional countries to work towards a joint security arrangement. He argued that regional problems should be addressed through diplomacy and blamed the United States for contributing to insecurity and tensions around the strategically important waterway.
Araghchi said Iran welcomed initiatives aimed at creating regional security without the presence of foreign forces.
Russia Says It Wants a Diplomatic Solution
Despite his strong political support for Tehran, Lavrov also emphasised diplomacy.
He called for a return to conditions that existed before the conflict, including freedom of navigation through the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz and guarantees against renewed military action.
Russia has also said it is prepared to use its diplomatic position to help resolve the crisis. However, the precise nature and limits of Russian assistance to Iran remain a major question for Washington and other governments.
A New Challenge for Trump
Lavrov's visit highlights the difficult diplomatic balancing act facing the Trump administration.
Washington wants Moscow to remain engaged in efforts to end the Ukraine war, while simultaneously trying to prevent Russia from expanding its support for Tehran.
At the same time, Moscow is seeking to maintain its strategic relationship with Iran and publicly defend Tehran's position.
The contrasting statements from Trump and Lavrov therefore underline the increasingly complicated relationships between the United States, Russia and Iran.
Final Thoughts
Sergei Lavrov's visit to Tehran has demonstrated that Russia remains politically supportive of Iran, despite Donald Trump's claim that Moscow is currently doing little to assist Tehran.
While Russia's exact level of military involvement remains uncertain, Lavrov's strong public backing and commitment to continued economic cooperation show that Moscow is not distancing itself from Iran.
With tensions continuing around the Strait of Hormuz and diplomacy still being discussed, the relationship between Russia and Iran is likely to remain an important factor in the wider Middle Eastern crisis.
