Trump Says Decision Time Nears on Iran Deal or Renewed Attacks
Trump Says Decision Time Nears on Iran Deal or Renewed Attacks
US President Donald Trump has warned that a major decision is approaching over the future of the conflict with Iran, saying Washington may either reach an agreement with Tehran or resume military action. His latest comments come as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East and concerns grow over attacks on American personnel, commercial shipping and regional infrastructure.
Trump said in a Fox News interview that he now faces a choice between making a deal with Iran and “finish[ing] it off”. The remarks suggest that the White House is increasingly focused on whether diplomacy can produce a workable agreement or whether military pressure will return.
Trump Signals Possible Return to Military Action
The US president has indicated that American strikes against Iran could resume after the November 3 midterm elections. Washington has also moved additional military forces towards the Persian Gulf, including a third aircraft carrier group.
Trump has previously said the United States could end the conflict quickly. On October 23, he said Washington could either “finish it off” or allow the conflict to gradually “wither”, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the administration's next move.
However, Trump also said on October 25 that there would be no US strike that day, leaving open the possibility that diplomatic efforts could continue.
Iran Remains Under Heavy Pressure
Iran is facing increasing pressure as the United States maintains its military presence around the region and tensions continue around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy routes.
Trump has claimed that the United States now has significant control over the strait, while Iranian officials have rejected reports that Tehran offered to reopen it in exchange for the lifting of the US naval blockade.
The dispute has created uncertainty for global oil markets. Any prolonged disruption around the Strait of Hormuz could affect energy supplies, shipping costs and fuel prices worldwide.
Diplomacy Still Remains Possible
Despite the aggressive rhetoric, diplomatic channels have not completely disappeared. Iran has indicated that it remains open to talks through intermediaries, while Pakistani and Qatari officials have been involved in efforts to keep communication between Washington and Tehran alive.
The Associated Press reported that Iran remains willing to resume talks under an interim arrangement brokered with the involvement of Pakistan and Qatar. Tehran has also linked progress towards an agreement to specific conditions, suggesting that negotiations could still play an important role.
The challenge is finding terms acceptable to both sides. Washington wants guarantees over Iran's nuclear programme and regional security, while Tehran is seeking an end to military pressure and restrictions affecting its economy and shipping.
Growing Threat to US Personnel
Another major concern is the safety of American diplomats and military personnel across the region.
The United States has already reduced diplomatic and military staffing in parts of the Middle East following increasing threats from Iran and Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen. Bloomberg reported that staffing changes are taking place more broadly as attacks on ships near the Strait of Hormuz intensify.
These security concerns could make diplomacy even more difficult. At the same time, they increase pressure on Washington to determine whether continued military operations or negotiations offer the better path forward.
What Happens Next?
The coming weeks could prove critical for US-Iran relations. A negotiated agreement could reduce military tensions, reopen important shipping routes and ease pressure on global energy markets. A return to major strikes, however, could trigger another dangerous escalation involving Iran, Israel, the Houthis and other regional actors.
For now, Trump is keeping both possibilities open. His message is clear: Washington believes the current situation cannot continue indefinitely, and a major decision on Iran is approaching.
