The oldest patient at City of Hope is cured of blood cancer and has achieved HIV remission

After obtaining a blood stem cell transplant from a donor who had a unique genetic mutation, the oldest patient at City of Hope, one of the biggest cancer research and treatment centres in the United States, was treated to be cured of a blood malignancy and subsequently attain remission for HIV. According to research that was just published in the NEJM, older persons with blood malignancies may be cured of HIV infection if they undergo less intensive chemotherapy prior to receiving a stem cell transplant using donor cells that are HIV-resistant.

Paul Edmonds, 68, of Desert Springs, California, is the fifth person in the world to successfully utilise stem cells carrying the uncommon homozygous CCR5 Delta 32 mutation to establish remission from acute myelogenous leukaemia and HIV

Of these five patients, Edmonds is referred to as the "City of Hope patient" since, on February 6, 2019, he underwent a transplant at City of Hope and is currently thought to be cancer-free. After quitting antiretroviral medications for five years, Edmonds will be deemed HIV-cured. He stopped taking antiretroviral therapy for the virus about three years ago.

Leading the study was clinical professor Jana K. Dickter, M.D. of City of Hope's Division of Infectious Diseases. "City of Hope's case demonstrates that it is possible to achieve remission from HIV even at an older age and after living with HIV for many years," Dickter said.
