Drones attacked the US Embassy in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, and a fire was reported

The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, was struck by two drones early on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Saudi Ministry of Defence. The ministry said the attack caused a limited fire and minor material damage to the diplomatic building.

Black smoke was seen rising over Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter — the area where foreign missions including embassies are located — shortly after the drone strikes were reported. Witnesses heard a loud blast and saw flames at the compound, though the fire was small and contained, officials and reporters said.

No Injuries, Building Empty at Time of Attack

Officials said the embassy was empty at the time of the strike, and no casualties have been reported so far. Saudi air defences reportedly intercepted four drones, but two still struck the U.S. diplomatic mission.
Shelter in Place and U.S. Advisory

In response to the strikes, the U.S. Embassy issued a “shelter in place” notice for American citizens in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran, urging them to remain indoors and avoid the embassy until further notice.
Context — Part of Regional Tensions

Analysts note this incident comes amid rising regional tensions, particularly as Iran has been carrying out missile and drone strikes across Gulf states in retaliation for earlier U.S. and Israeli military actions. An updated overview of these events shows the Riyadh embassy attack was one among several that have affected U.S. and allied interests in the region.
U.S. Response Expected

U.S. President Donald Trump was quoted saying that a response would soon be announced, although official details remain limited at this stage.
