Recap of the 2026 Grammy Awards: Cher Makes a mistake onstage, Bad Bunny Weeps After Winning Album of the Year, and More

The 68th Annual Grammy Awards delivered an unforgettable night of historic wins, emotional moments, political statements and a few awkward slip-ups as music’s biggest stars gathered at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on 1 February 2026. Hosted by Trevor Noah in his final year as Grammy host, the show celebrated a wide range of musical talent and culture with performances and speeches that will be remembered long after the trophies were handed out.

One of the most talked-about moments of the evening came when Bad Bunny made history by winning Album of the Year for his groundbreaking Spanish-language record Debí Tirar Más Fotos. This marked the first time in Grammy history that an album primarily in Spanish claimed the top prize, a milestone moment for Latin music and representation in mainstream awards. During his acceptance speech, Bad Bunny became visibly emotional, even wiping away tears as he thanked his family, his fans and his Puerto Rican roots for their enduring support.

Bad Bunny didn’t stop there — earlier in the night he had already won Best Música Urbana Album and went on to take Best Global Music Performance, further cementing his remarkable night at the Grammys. He also used his speech platform to make a political statement, opening with “ICE out,” and calling for compassion and unity amid heated debates about immigration and federal enforcement policies in the United States.

While many moments at the Grammys were celebratory, not all were perfectly smooth. Cher, who was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award, also found herself part of a humorous onstage gaffe. While presenting the Record of the Year award, she mistakenly referred to the late soul singer Luther Vandross instead of the actual winners, Kendrick Lamar and SZA, for their hit Luther. The mix-up offered a light-hearted, human moment amid the glamour of the evening and sparked laughs on social media.

Other standout winners included Kendrick Lamar, who took home Record of the Year and became the most-awarded rapper in Grammy history, surpassing Jay-Z’s long-standing record. His night was capped off with multiple wins and strong recognition from his peers. Billie Eilish won Song of the Year for Wildflower, and Olivia Dean was named Best New Artist, highlighting a new generation of breakout performers.

Performances throughout the night ran the gamut from high-energy pop to heartfelt tributes. Artists such as Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter and Justin Bieber took to the stage with memorable sets, while the In Memoriam segment honoured music legends including Roberta Flack and D’Angelo with touching tributes.

Despite a few awkward moments — including technical blips and stage stumbles — the 2026 Grammys stood out for its historic awards, emotional speeches and bold statements from artists using their platform to speak on issues beyond music. Whether you were tuning in for the fashion, the performances or the winners list, this year’s ceremony delivered a mix of powerful storytelling and unforgettable music industry history.
