West Indies Set Record ODI Total Against India in Extraordinary Guwahati Run-Fest
The West Indies produced a stunning batting performance against India in the second ODI in Guwahati, scoring a record 405 for seven. The massive total was the highest ever posted by the West Indies in men’s ODI cricket, surpassing their previous best of 389 against England in 2019.
Three West Indies batters reached centuries in an extraordinary display of attacking cricket. John Campbell scored 101, captain Shai Hope made 104, while Amir Jangoo struck 114. It was only the sixth occasion in ODI history that three players from the same team had scored centuries in one innings.
Campbell provided the early foundation after West Indies were invited to bat first. He and Hope added 110 runs for the second wicket, putting India under pressure before Campbell completed his second ODI century. He eventually fell for 101 from 68 balls after hitting nine fours and five sixes.
Hope then combined with Jangoo for an even more damaging partnership. The pair added 182 runs for the third wicket, attacking India's bowling and keeping the scoreboard moving at a remarkable rate. Hope's century was particularly significant because it was his 20th in ODI cricket, taking him beyond West Indies legend Brian Lara's tally of 19. Only Chris Gayle, with 25 ODI centuries, remains ahead of him among West Indies players.
Jangoo was equally impressive, reaching his second ODI century from only 70 balls. His aggressive innings helped West Indies cross the 400-run mark for the first time in their ODI history.
India's bowlers struggled to contain the West Indies batting assault, although Kuldeep Yadav produced an important individual milestone. The left-arm spinner took two wickets and reached 200 ODI wickets, becoming the fastest Indian spinner to reach the landmark.
At 405 for seven, West Indies appeared to have put themselves in an extremely strong position. India needed 406 runs to win, which would require them to break their previous ODI record chase of 362 against Australia in 2013.
However, what followed turned the match into one of the most extraordinary ODI contests of the year.
India's captain Shubman Gill produced a sensational unbeaten double century, while Rohit Sharma also scored a century. India eventually chased down the 406-run target in only 43.3 overs, completing the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.
Gill finished unbeaten on 223, while Rohit contributed 101. Their opening partnership of 255 runs provided India with a remarkable platform and transformed what initially looked like an enormous target into a successful chase.
The result also gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. Despite the defeat, West Indies can take considerable encouragement from their batting performance, particularly the centuries from Campbell, Hope and Jangoo.
The Guwahati match also highlighted the extraordinary batting conditions on the day. With more than 800 runs scored across the two innings, the contest became a showcase of modern ODI batting, power hitting and aggressive intent.
For West Indies, the 405-run total will remain a significant milestone. For India, Gill's extraordinary double century and the successful chase created an equally memorable record.
The third ODI will provide West Indies with an opportunity to finish the series strongly, while India will look to build further momentum ahead of the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.
